Smartphone Comparison Between Htc HD2 and Motorola Droid
The HTC HD2 for T-Mobile and the Motorola DROID for Verizon Wireless are two of the elite handsets in the market. These handsets are hard to beat when it comes to specs, features and capabilities. However, the HD2 and the DROID are the top handset for their respective carriers and are currently competing for the attention of consumers. Lets look at the features and capabilities of these top smartphones
Design/Form Factor
The Motorola DROID features a popular design that offers a potent combination of a large touchscreen display and a QWERTY keyboard. The DROID manages to offer both of these features in a relatively slim body (13.7 mm). It’s a large and heavy handset that measures 4.56 inches tall by 2.36 inches wide and weighs 5.96 ounces.
The HTC HD2′s design focuses on its extra-large touchscreen display. It sports a distinctive large body that measures 4.74 inches tall by 2.64 inches wide and weighs 5.54 ounces. This device manages to be slim at just 0.43 inch thick despite its huge screen and wide range of features.
Both of these handsets have large bodies to accommodate a large display and a wide range of features. The DROID has an edge in text input department because it offers a physical QWERTY keyboard. However, the HD2 is not far behind because its large display and sensitive touch screen allows it to offer one of the best virtual QWERTY keyboards currently available.
Touchscreen/ Display
The DROID offers one of the best touchscreen displays in the market. It measures 3.7 inches with 16 million hues and 440×854 pixels resolution. The display is bright and brilliant with vibrant colors and sharp graphics.
The DROID’s display is pretty hard to beat. But the HD2 arguably sports the best touchscreen among smartphones in the market. At 4.3-inches, the HD2′s capacitive touch screen is the largest among the smartphones that are currently on the market. It’s superior size and sharp WVGA (480×800) resolution makes it vibrant and readable in various lighting conditions.
Operating System/UI
The Motorola DROID shipped with the Android 2.0 software but has now started to upgrade to the 2.1 version. This OS offers new features such as Live Wallpapers (a Palm WebOS-like Deck of Cards feature), more home screen panes, and additional 3D items in the app tray.
The HTC HD2 is arguably the best Windows Mobile Smartphone ever and it will never lose its title since Microsoft will now focus its efforts on Windows Phone 7. The HD2 features HTC’s Sense UI on top of Windows Mobile 6.5. This combination offers a tabbed toolbar along the bottom of the screen that allows users to easily run through and launch various apps by dragging a finger and then letting go when the desired program is reached. Unfortunately, this handset will not be upgradeable to Windows Phone 7.
Price:
Both of these top smartphones are currently being offered at $199.99 with a contract by their respective carriers.
Camera:
The Motorola DROID features a solid 5 MP camera with dual LED flash and DVD-quality recording (up to 24 fps D1 720 x 480 px resolution). Other Android Smartphones were lacking in the photo editing department but the DROID offers four white balance settings, several “scene” modes, three image quality choices, and seven color effects.
The HD2 sports an equally powerful 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, dual LED flash, video-recording capabilities and standard editing options.
The DROID’s camera suffered from early bugs but its ability to shoot HD videos gives it a slight edge over the HD2.
Processing Power
The Motorola DROID runs on a speedy a 550 mHz Arm Cortex A8 processor with 512MB ROM and 256MB RAM. However, these specs are dwarfed by the HD2′s 1GHz Snapdragon processor with 1GB ROM and 576MB RAM.
The HD2′s more powerful processor and more RAM means that it will perform better when running memory-intensive applications and multiple apps simultaneously.
Battery Performance:
The DROID is powered by a 1400 mAh Li-Ion battery with a rated battery life of 6.4 hours talk time and 11.25 days standby time.
The HD2 is powered by a 1230mAh lithium-ion battery with a rated battery life of 6 hours talk time and 20 days standby time.
